Wasp Control

In the Otago Region, the wasps that pose the greatest threat to human health & the ecosystem are European wasps, particularly the Common and German varieties. These wasps not only endanger human health with their stings, but also devastate local ecosystems. They raid beehives, prey on native insects, and consume crucial honeydew in beech forests, depriving native birds of essential food. Their distinctive paper nests are often found underground, in banks, or within structures. The Asian, Australian and European Paper Wasps form much smaller colonies than the common or German wasps and the nest will have only a few tens of cells in an open type nest. Paper Wasps are consequently less of a direct threat to people. However, they are a threat to native insect species such as Monarch Butterflies on which they feed.

Locating the nest

An increase in wasp activity around your property warrants careful observation of their flight patterns. This can help pinpoint the nest's location. Inspecting likely nesting sites for a 3-5cm entrance hole with active wasp traffic can confirm its presence.
